    Abstract: Magnetic iron oxide suitable for magnetogram carriers is produced by oxidation of iron carbonyls with oxygen-containing compounds that react endothermically with the iron carbonyls. The oxidizing agent may be reacted with liquid or vaporous iron carbonyl in an amount such that the iron oxide formed has an atomic ratio of iron to oxygen greater than 3:4, and heat may be supplied during the oxidation. In examples, iron pentacarbonyl is reacted with steam, with acetone in hydrogen, with methylethylketone, with methanol, with formaldehyde, with carbon dioxide, and with tetraethyl silicate. Other oxidizing agents mentioned are ethanol, propanol, butanol, and acetaldehyde. The iron oxide may be oxidized to gamma ferric oxide.
