Abstract: 1,030,423. Batteries. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. March 19, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 10744/63. Heading H1B. A process for producing a battery electrode includes the step of allowing a porous metal grid to be acted on by an ammonium compound under oxidizing conditions to form the active material. A grid of sintered nickel powder is impregnated with ammonium chloride and then exposed to an atmosphere of ammonia, water vapour and air or oxygen at elevated temperature to precipitate the hydroxide. Alternatively ammonium nitrate is used, and additional active material is deposited by adding nickel nitrate before, during or after the treatment with the ammonium compound. Tetra-ammine nickel nitrate is alternatively used. The activation takes place in a weakly acid to weakly alkaline medium (pH 4 to 10), acetic acid, propionic acid, citric acid, glycine, aluminium nitrate or other aluminium or zinc salts having amphoteric properties being added.

Abstract: A metal powder, e.g. nickel or iron, comprising a mixture of fine particles of 1 to 2 microns and heavier particles of 3 to 10 microns, is pressed into sintered porous electrodes and the active material is produced direct in the pores of the grid by converting the metal of the pore wall into active hydroxide by chemical attack, for example with aluminium nitrate, and subsequent action of alkali hydroxide solution are described in Specification 973,669 [Division H1]. The metal powder is obtained by thermal decomposition of the metal carbonyl.
