Abstract: The use of water-soluble or water-dispersible graft polymers of proteins obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation of: (A) a monomer or a monomer mixture of (a) 20 to 100 wt % acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or a mixture thereof or their alkaline metal, alkaline earth or ammonium salts, (b) 0 to 80 wt % other monoethylenically insaturated monomers which can be copolymerised with monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 50 wt % of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers having no conjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of proteins (B) in the proportion by weight of A : B of (95 to 10) : (5 to 90), as tanning agents for the sole tanning, pre-tanning and co-tanning of smoothed hides and for the post-tanning of leather and hides.
