    Abstract: PURPOSE: To achieve a uniform pigment distribution to enhance mechanical strength by reacting water glass, an aqueous dispersion liquid of a pigment, and a strong acid together to form a silica hydrogel, removing ion constituents, and forming a heat insulating material through heating and vaporization. CONSTITUTION: A water glass aqueous solution of 10 to 20% SiO2 concentration, an aqueous dispersion liquid of a pigment with particle diameters of 0.01 to 20 μm, such as carbon black, titanium dioxide, and magnetite, and a strong acid such as sulfuric acid or formic acid are reacted together and agitated to form a pigment-containing silica hydrogen. In this case, the pigment has the characteristic of scattering, absorbing, or reflecting infrared radiation of wavelength 3-10 μm. Next, a silica hydrogel is washed with water to eliminate ion constituents sufficiently; then the water is expelled by an inert liquid and heating to supercritical conditions is effected and subsequently the liquid is removed from the solid by flash vaporization at supercritical temperature to form a heat insulating material based on a pigment-containing silica aerogel. Thus, a uniform pigment distribution can be obtained.
