Abstract: In a new process for the prodn. of very finely divided carotenoids (carotenoid particle size essentially less than 1 micron), (A) a carotenoid is dissolved in a gas in the supercritical state (i.e. at a temp. above the critical temp. and under a pressure greater than the critical pressure); (B) the resulting soln. is dispersed in a suitable aq. colloidal matrix; (C) the dispersion is depressurised, and (D) the prod. is opt. converted in a conventional manner into a water-dispersible carotenoid-contg. powder mixt. The carotenoids are for use in colouring foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics, or for administration to poultry to give improved egg-yolk pigmentation.
