Abstract: Method (M) of hydrogenation of sugar(s) (I) to sugar alcohol(s) (II), comprises contacting at least one (I) with hydrogen in presence of a catalyst. Catalyst is a monolithic supported catalyst obtained by: (a) successively heating and cooling a metal fabric or film carrier in air; (b) coating with active component (i.e. at least one Group VIII metal, optionally together with at least one Group I or VII transition metal) under vacuum; (c) cutting and shaping; and (d) processing to give the monolithic catalyst. An independent claim is also included for the synthesis of vitamin C, including the preparation of sorbitol from glucose by (M).

Abstract: The invention relates to metal-free phthalocyanine of the gamma modification, characterised by the X-ray powder diagram (pattern) (CuK alpha ) having the essential glancing angles (Bragg angles) 2 theta [@] 6.8, 7.4, 13.6, 14.9, 15.9, 16.9, 20.5, 22.4, 24.7, 26.2 and 27.8, on its own or as a mixture with other modifications, in the mixtures, the glancing angles may be displaced by +/- 0.2@. The pigments according to the invention are suitable, inter alia, for colouring printing inks, plastics and paints.
