Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding compsn. contains 5-95 (wt.)% polyphenylene ether (I) with Mw = 15000-40000, 5-95% impact-modified polymer (II) based on vinyl-aromatic monomers and modified with 1-4% elastomer (III), and 0-20% other polymers compatible with (I) and (II). Pref., the compsn. contains 20-80% (I) and 20-80% (II). (I) has Mw = 20000-35000. (II) is based on a styrene polymer and (III) is a conjugated diene polymer. (II) is produced by polymerising the monomers of (II) in the presence of (III) or by mixing (III)-free (II) with (II) contg. over 4% (III). The compsn. may also contain up to 1 pt. filler, pref. glass fibres, per pt. mixt. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsn. is claimed for making mouldings. It has a good total spectrum of the mechanical properties and esp. good reproducibility of the impact strength and tensile strength. Impairment of flow is minimised and smooth mouldings can be made, e.g., by injection moulding or extrusion. The compsn. is esp. suitable for sanitary ware and electronic and electrical components.
