Abstract: Dehydration of clear sludge, esp. industrial sludge, in presence of residual ash (I) from clear sludge combustion, as dehydration auxiliary, is accelerated by addn. of 1-100 (5-50) ppm., w. r. t. clea sludge wt., anionic polyelectrolytes, (II). Wt. ratio (I) : (II) is 250: 1 to 150000 : 1. Dry clear sludge can be burnt and recycled to process. Ash residues, not required for further sludge processing and dehydration, can be used as raw materials ror road surfacing, mortars and coatings. (I) and (II) act synergetically and their combined use can halve required concn. of (I) and reduce required concn. of (II) by 90%; and filtration can be completed in 0.5-2 hrs.

Abstract: Sludges are flocculated by the addition of a polymer which is prepared by the homopolymerization of N-vinylformamide in the presence of a free-radical polymerization initiator to give a poly-N-vinylformamide, followed by hydrolysis of from 10 to 90% of the formyl groups in the poly-N-vinylformamide.

Abstract: Drying of acrylmaide (co)polymers contg. water, or their aq. solns. by evaporation of the water in presence of 0.1-1 wt. % based on (co)polymer, of a water-soluble hydroxylamine. The water may be removed by any process e.g. or heated rolls, in a hot air fluidised bed or pref. by azeotropic distn. Drying of acrylamide polymers, or copolymers with (meth)acrylic acid and/or dialkylamino alkyl acrylates, contg. 40-100% acrylamide with mol. wt. 1-25 x 106. The (co)polymers mayb e made by soln., suspension or emulsion polymerisation, and may be highly concentrated or in dilute aq. soln. Degradation of the (co)polymers by heat, producing insoluble gels, is prevented by the hydroxylamine stabiliser.
