Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an impact-resistant thermoplastic resin composed of a wet elastomer component and a fragile thermoplastic polymer in an industrially simple manner by one treatment process if possible. SOLUTION: An elastomer component A is supplied to a twin-screw extruder formed from a distribution section, a crushing section, a, section supplying a thermoplastic polymer B to the extruder, a section equipped with a mixing element, a kneading element and/or a separate plasticizing element, a degassing section and a feed-out zone in a feed direction and equipped with screws rotated in the same way and the water discharged from a dehydration opening is allowed to be present as a liquid phase partially or wholly. Therefore, the residual water contained in rubber partially dehydrated at first is already removed as water in the first crushing section and the feed amt. of rubber is 3-8wt.% of the amt. of the wet rubber in the first crushing section and below 1wt.% in a second crushing section.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture impact resistant thermoplastic in a single step as far as possible by supplying elastomer composition containing residual moisture up to specific wt.% to a biaxial extruder having double threaded screws rotating in the same direction so that the moisture from a dehydration part partly or entirely becomes a liquid state. SOLUTION: The zones of a biaxial extruder are arranged as follows toward the axial direction of the extruder. The zones include the metering supply zone 2 of elastomer composition A containing the residual moisture up to 60wt.%, first compression zone 3, second compression zone 3', intermediate site feeding screw zone 0, zone 4 supplied with melted material of thermoplastic B, first plasticizing zone 5, second plasticizing zone 5', first deaerating zone 6, second deaerating zone 6' and discharge zone 7. The two screws of the extruder are formed as deeply engraved threads and double threads. The extruder is operated by the number of revolutions of the screw from 50 to 600min , and shearing speed of 20 to 240s .

Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing thermoplastics modified to be impactresistant or polymer blends containing such modified thermoplastics. The thermoplastics or polymer blends contain: (A) 5 to 95 wt % of at least one water-wet elastomer component A which contains up to 60 wt % residual water; (B) 5 to 95 wt % of at least one thermoplastic polymer B; (C) 0 to 95 wt % of at least another polymer C; and (D) 0 to 70 wt % additives D. The elastomer component A is mixed with the thermoplastic polymer B, if available with the other polymer C and if available with the additives D in a screw-machine while mechanically dewatering the elastomer component A. The process is characterised in that components A, B, C and D are supplied to an extruder with at least two screws that rotate in the same or opposite directions and have a diameter Dscrew. Seen in the feeding direction (downstream), the extruder substantially consists of at least one dosing section in which the elastomer component A is supplied to the extruder by a dosing device; at least one squeezing section for dewatering the elastomer component A having at least one pressure element and at least a corresponding dewatering opening located upstream of the (first) pressure element at a distance therefrom equal to at least one screw diameter Dscrew; at least one feeding section in which the thermoplastic polymer B is fed into the extruder as a molten mass; at least one plasticising section fitted with mixing and/or kneading elements; at least one degassing section with at least one degassing hole in which the residual water is removed as steam; and an extraction zone. The water expelled through the dewatering openings is partially or totally present in the liquid phase, and components C and/or are supplied together or separately, either together with components A and/or B or separately from A and B in one or more of the above-mentioned extruder sections.

This extruder contains the following sections (in the direction of flow) : (1) feed for adding (A) to the extruder ; (2) at least one crusher for dewatering (A) that contains one or more barriers each with an opening through which at least some of the water passes as a liq. ; (3) at least one section to which molten (B) is added ; (4) one or more sections with mixing, kneading and / or plasticising devices ; (5) at least one degassing section with one or more gas outlets through which the rest of the water is removed as steam ; and (6) an exit zone. Deep draw-modified moulding materials prepd. by this process are also claimed.

Abstract: A process is claimed for the prodn. of impact-modified thermoplastics (I) by (a) mechanical dehydration of a moist elastomer component (A) contg. up to 60 wt% residual water and (b) mixing the dried elastomer obtd. (A') with a thermoplastic polymer (B) in a screw machine. The process is carried out in a twin screw extruder with synchronous double-threaded screws and with the following sequence in the direction of feed: (1) a metering section for introducing component (A) into the extruder via a metering device, (2) squeezing section(s) for removing the water, with accumulator element(s) and associated water outlet(s), (3) section(s) fitted with a feeder screw or with mixing, kneading and/or other plasticising elements, (4) section(s) in which polymer (B) is added as a melt, (5) section(s) fitted with mixing, kneading and/or other plasticising elements, (6) degassing section(s) with gas outlets, in which residual water is removed as vapour, and (7) a discharge zone. The water emerging from the outlets in section (2) is partly or completely in the liq. phase, and the extruder is operated at a screw speed of 50-600 r.p.m., with a mean shear rate of 20-240 s . Also claimed are impact-modified thermoplastic moulding materials (I) obtd. by this process.
