    Abstract: The parent patent covers a viscosity testing machine where weights actuate a thrust rod expelling the material from a testing cylinder through a nozzle, the rate of expulsion being measured. The addition comprises the following automatically controlled improvements; a motor driven feed screw in the feed duct supplying plastics to the unit; a wiper which keeps the plunger shaft clean of plastics spilling through the gland of the cylinder, but is removed from this shaft during the measureing run; and a two-part weight, comprising a heavy weight for tamping the material and a determined weight which is used alone during the test operation.

    Abstract: A method for continuously, automatically examining a plastics tube to detect inhomogeneities is as follows: the tube after leaving the cooling ring of the extruder passes without contact perpendicularly to the line through the diaphragms of an optical detector between two symmetrically arranged lenses; the light beam passing through the apparatus is projected onto a screen and converted into electrical signals which are continuously recorded. The method enables point-type faults such as "fish-eyes" to be detected in preference to longitudinal streaks, while the tube is still in its blown state before being flattened into a sheet.
