    Abstract: 1,226,659. Propylene polymerization. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 9 Aug., 1968 [10 Aug., 1967], No. 38185/68. Heading C3P. Propylene is polymerized in the gaseous phase in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst system wherein purified propylene (which is suitable for achieving a catalyst activity of at least 3000 parts of polymer per part of catalyst per hour; a method of determining the catalyst activity is given in the Specification) is introduced in liquid form into the reaction zone, vaporized and polymerized therein, in the presence of a catalyst whose molar ratio of titanium compound to aluminium compound is in the range of 1: 0À5 to 1: 6. Unpolymerized monomer, on leaving the reaction zone, may be condensed and recycled with fresh monomer. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 10 to 100 atmospheres, 70 to 120‹ C., and using a catalyst comprising TiCl 3 , AlCl 3 and Al(Et) 3 . The homopolymerization of propylene is exemplified and the process is also applicable to the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene.

    Abstract: Propylene opt. together with other monomers is polymerised in the gas phase in presence of Ziegler catalysts by introducing liquid propylene into the reaction zone, vaporising and polymerising, at catalyst activity is not 3000 pts. polymer/pt. catalyst-hr, using catalyst with molar ratio of Ti to al cpd. in 1:0.5-6 range, as in DT1720292, the process being modified by carrying out continuous polymerisation in presence of H2 as mol. wt. regulator and using mixt. of AlEt3 and AlEt2Cl in 4-1:1 molar ratio as reducing component of the Ziegler catalyst. This process can be used to produce polymer with intrinsic viscosity 3, i.e. 1.8-3.0 dl/g. in free-running, powder form, which can be processed conveniently in the fused state.
