Abstract: A process measures the retention of an additive (A) in a sample of fibrous suspension in which the additive is admixed to the suspension at a defined speed. The resulting mixture then flows through a pipe (6) and a filter, following which the residual admixture is determined and the retention calculated. The presence of the additive is determined by fluroescent-spectroscopy or ion-selective electrodes (12). The additive (A) is a calcium carbonate bulk filler or an alkyl-ketendime. Two or more additives (A, B, C) are added to the solution of suspended fibres in succession. After the introduction of the first additive, and prior to the admission of a further additive (C), the sample flows through a zone in which the solution is subjected to shear forces. The first additive contains water-soluble polymers. The further additive (C) is a particulate phase. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly.
