    Abstract: Nitric oxide is produced by reaction of ammonia (1 volume) with oxygen (1.28-1.4, e.g. 1.33 volumes) in presence of (a) a Pt (e.g. Pt-Rh) catalyst and (b) steam. Preferably the steam is separated from the reaction gas by condensation as dilute nitric acid, the latter being used to wash the reaction gas; it is particularly preferred to treat the washed gas with an alkaline reagent such as 10% NaOH.

    Abstract: Finely divided, substantially pure calcium carbonate is produced by the reaction between aqueous calcium salt solutions, e.g. the nitrate or chloride, and aqueous solutions of ammonium, sodium or potassium carbonates in the presence of water soluble fluorides, e.g. those of sodium, potassium or ammonium. The fluoride is preferably present in the proportion of 0,05-5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the carbonate. After precipitation and filtration the filtrate contains no measurable amount of fluorine. The example refers to calcium carbonate being precipitated from a calcium chloride solution by the addition of ammonium carbonate solution containing 0,2% of potassium fluoride based on the carbonate. The calcium carbonate so produced has a particle size of 0,1m , a fluoride content of 0,09%, and the settling volume of a suspension of 10 g. in 100 c.c. of water is 99 c.c. after two hours.

    Abstract: Ammonium nitrate of high bulk density and low hygroscopicity is produced by adding sodium, magnesium and phosphate ions at a stage in the processing prior to granulation. At least 0,1% sodium ions and 0,5% phosphate ions are added as Na3PO4, or Na2HPO4, or Na+ is added separately as one or more of the salts NaCl, NaNo3, NaF and Na2SO4, and phosphate ion is added as one or more of (NH4)3PO4, (NH4)2HPO4, Ca3(PO4)2, MgHPO4 K2HPO4, and K3PO4. At least 0,1% of Mg++ is added as Mg(NO3)2, MgSO4, MgCl2, or together with phosphate as Mg(NH4)PO4. The preferred proportions of salts are such that 0,3 to 1,0% of each ion, calculated as the oxide P2O5, Na2O and MgO, is present. The salts are added either during neutralization of the nitric acid by NH3, or to the resultant NH4NO3 solution before, or after, concentration, i.e. to an aqueous NH4NO3 solution, or melt.
