    Abstract: NO obtained by the catalytic oxidation of NH3 in the presence of steam and containing NO2 and H2O is purified by indirect cooling to 80-92 DEG C. to remove 70-85% of the water as nitric acid of less than 1% concentration, followed by direct cooling with nitric acid of at least 15% concentration, which is recycled. The oxidation may be effected at 850-900 DEG C. using a Pt-Rh catalyst, and the gases leave at 130-150 DEG C. The recycle acid may be cooled indirectly with water and/or brine to 13-42 DEG C., and preferably has a concentration of 18-21%; part is withdrawn as product.

    Abstract: Nitric oxide is produced by reaction of ammonia (1 volume) with oxygen (1.28-1.4, e.g. 1.33 volumes) in presence of (a) a Pt (e.g. Pt-Rh) catalyst and (b) steam. Preferably the steam is separated from the reaction gas by condensation as dilute nitric acid, the latter being used to wash the reaction gas; it is particularly preferred to treat the washed gas with an alkaline reagent such as 10% NaOH.
