Abstract: 1466914 N-Alkylarylamines BASF AG 12 July 1974 [14 July 1973] 30910/74 Heading C2C In a process for the continuous production of a N-alkylarylamine by the reaction of an arylamine with an alkanol and/or a dialkyl ether in the gas phase at 180‹ to 450‹ C. in the presence of a carrier substance containing an oxyacid of phosphorus, there is used as the catalyst a silicic acid having an internal surface area of 50 to 500 sq. metres per gm. and having a phosphoric acid content of from 0À1 to 20% by wt., and phosphoric acid and/or an alkyl phosphate is continuously supplied to the catalyst during the reaction. The arylamine starting material preferably has the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl; R 2 is hydrogen; R 3 is hydrogen, cyano, nitro, C 1 to C 4 alkyl or alkoxy or a radical of the formula wherein R 4 is C 1 to C 3 alkylene or alkylidene; R 5 is hydrogen or (when n=1) C 1 to C 4 alkyl, and R 6 is hydrogen; and n is 1 or 2.
