Abstract: Fluidisable solids, which must not be subjected to temp., press. and/or impact stress, are metered into a reactor by fluidising the solids and transferring it from a vortex bed into the reactor by means of a propellant gas stream, opt. with addn. of minor amts. of fluidisation aids. The claimed sensitive solid is a polymerisation catalyst azobisisobutyronitrile and other aliphatic azo cpds., and peroxides, are specifically claimed. Even small amts. of solids, e.g. 100 g/hr., can be accurately and uniformly fed to a reactor. In a polymerisation process, constant amts. of catalyst can be metered into the reactor over long periods of time; blockage of the appts. is avoided. As well as polymerisation catalysts, other additives, e.g. pigments or filter aids, can be metered by this method. An inert gas, e.g. N2 or He, is pref. as fluidisation medium. Azobisisobutyronitrile is crystalline and easily forms agglomerates; addn. of a fluidisation aid, e.g. SiO2 gel, avoids this trouble.
