Abstract: Processing waste material obtd. from the processing of polyester sheet moulding materials (SMC) consisting of mouldable self-supporting sheets of glass fibre reinforced thickened unsatd. polyester resin covered on both sides with a covering film, whereby the pieces of waste material are hardened by irradiatioon with electromagnetic waves, opt. mechanically comminuted and then either dumped or used as a filler. USE/ADVANTAGE - The SMC scrap can be hardened by irradiation eg with infra red or microwaves in less than 5, esp. less than 23 mins to give a hardened prod. contg. less than 3 wt.%, esp. less than 1 wt.% residual styrene. In this form the material can be dumped directly or it may be comminuted to give a prod. suitable for use as a filler eg in thermoplastics without exacting property requirements or as a glass rich filler for prodn. of SMC or BMC (polyester dough moulding compounds) according to EP application NO.9 01 13 009.6. Abstract: The prepn. of pigmented, curable moulding materials by mixing (a) 100 pts. wt. of an unsatd. polyester; (b) 30-150 pts. wt. of a monomer copolymerisable with (a); (c) 1-100 pts. wt. of a thermoplastic polymer; and (d) 0.1-15 pts. wt. of a colour pigment; and opt. (e) the usual additives. The pigment is dispersed in at least one part of the thermoplastic polymer using an extruder at temps. in the range of the m.pt. of the thermoplastics. Pref. the dispersion process lasts no more than 5 mins.. USE/ADVANTAGE - The moulding materials can be used to form coloured moulded prods.. No pigment sepn. occurs due to the use of two polymers, and the components can be mixed in the usual mixing devices.
