    Abstract: Processing waste material obtd. from the processing of polyester sheet moulding materials (SMC) consisting of mouldable self-supporting sheets of glass fibre reinforced thickened unsatd. polyester resin covered on both sides with a covering film, whereby the pieces of waste material are hardened by irradiatioon with electromagnetic waves, opt. mechanically comminuted and then either dumped or used as a filler. USE/ADVANTAGE - The SMC scrap can be hardened by irradiation eg with infra red or microwaves in less than 5, esp. less than 23 mins to give a hardened prod. contg. less than 3 wt.%, esp. less than 1 wt.% residual styrene. In this form the material can be dumped directly or it may be comminuted to give a prod. suitable for use as a filler eg in thermoplastics without exacting property requirements or as a glass rich filler for prodn. of SMC or BMC (polyester dough moulding compounds) according to EP application NO.9 01 13 009.6.     Abstract: Recycled plastic moulding material (I) contains (A) 100 pts. wt. recycled polyamide, (B) 5-100 pts. wt. recycled thermoset contg. crosslinked plastic and reinforcing fibres, (C) 0-40 pts. wt. acid gp.- and/or diene gp.- and/or ester gp.-contg. ethylene copolymer and (D) 0-60 pts. wt. normal additives for plastic mixts. Prodn. of (I) comprises melting opt. pulverised (A), opt. with (C), in an extruder, adding pulverised (B) (opt. together with D), homogenising the mixt. and extruding. Pref., (B) contains 20-80 wt.% thermoset, pref. crosslinked UP resin, 10-40 wt.% fibres, pref. glass fibres and 0-70 wt.% filler, pref. chalk. Pref. (B) is used in the form of plastic-coated fibres or fibre bundles with mean length 0.2-1.0 mm, or finely-ground particles with mean dia. 20-100 microns. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of tubes, profiles, sheet and injection mouldings (claimed). The mechanical properties of recycled polyamide are improved by addn. of recycled reinforced thermoset (B), so that the mixt. can be moulded to give prods. with adequate mechanical properties, esp. rigidity and strength.
