Abstract: 1,130,315. Endless conveyers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 18 Feb., 1966 [19 Feb., 1965], No. 7186/66. Heading B8A. [Also in Division B5] Radiant heaters 17 (Fig. 1) fuse the ends of laterally disposed tubular blanks gripped between opposed pairs 6 of endless conveyers by which they are carried over slide rails 3 whose spacing may be adjusted. In the form shown the conveyers consist of chains (6) (Fig. 2, not shown) equipped with straps (6b) gripping the blanks and guided by rails (8) . . . (11) cooled by watercooled bars (12). The heaters are radiant quartz tube heaters. The fused portions are subsequently cooled by endless steel bands (27) (Fig. 3, not shown) backed by water-cooled members (29) and engaging portions of the blanks partly protected from the radiant heat by being disposed in the gap (13) (Fig. 2, not shown) between the guides (10), (11). The fused portions are then formed by grooved rollers (41), (42) (Fig. 4, not shown). The forming rollers (41), (42), and the rollers carrying the cooling bands (27), (28) are biased against adjustable stops set in accordance with the thickness of the blanks. Before entering the heated region the ends of the blanks are trimmed by a rotary member 44. The spacing of the heaters 17 from the conveyers may be adjusted, and the heaters are preferably nearer to the conveyer at one end than at the other. The spacing between the slide rails 3 may be varied by a crank 5 controlling lazy tongs 4.

Abstract: 1,094,783. Sealing plastics bags. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. March 26, 1965 [March 28, 1964], No. 12861/65. Heading B8C. The open end of tubular plastics material (forming a bag) is trimmed straight and a closure strip is folded longitudinally into V- shape and placed over the open end, the inner surface of the strip and the outer surfaces of the end adjacent the strip are heated and pressure is applied to unite the strip with and close the end. Bags 73 are fed in between rollers 45-48 around which run conveyer belts 38, 39, 53, 54, the bag mouth being trimmed by rotary cutters 37, 37a, so that the cut-off piece 52 is laterally discharged by the uppermost conveyers 53, 54 and the trimmed bag continues to advance to beneath a flat closure strip 56 fed from a roll 55 around a guide roll 57 and brought into V-shape by wires 58. Two opposed wheels 59, 60 (59 being driven and 60 being mounted on a shaft 70 movable eccentrically about a shaft 14) grip together the strip and the trimmed bag and convey them to a heat sealing station, the eccentrically mounted shaft 70 being moved by a contact (not shown) operating when the leading edge of the bag reaches a point 74. Heated copper wedges 61, 61a, which are pivoted about horizontal axes (63), (63a), Fig. 4 (not shown), and rest normally in a lower position under the weight of heating coils (75), (75a), are raised by magnets (64), (64a) so that they contact the outer faces of the mouth of the bag and the two inner faces of the strip at the same time, a shaped metal sheet 65 serving as a support during the contact with the heating wedges. The strip is then gripped and pressed together by two spring-mounted wheels 67, 68 and conveyed out of the apparatus. A scissor member 76 cuts the closure strip immediately behind the closed bag. The seam may be air cooled by means of a blower.
