Abstract: 1,042,415. Closing filled bags. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. May 11, 1964, No. 19508/64. Addition to 980,085. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] The apparatus for heat sealing plastics sheeting of the parent Specification is modified in that the jet used for the hot air treatment of the sealing zone of the sheeting 8 comprises a rectangular jet surface 5 in which the jet openings 6 comprise a plurality of bores evenly distributed over the whole of the surface 5 which is bounded by walls on its edges so that the walls 2, 4, 7 perpendicular to the surface 5 extend beyond it in the direction of the sealing zone. The hot air is supplied through a pipe 10 and after passing through the openings 6 collects in a space 9. As shown in Fig. 3, the sheeting 8 passes between a pair of opposed hot air jets 11 and then between two motor-driven rollers 12 having a toothed profile 15 and which are preferably made of aluminium. To solidify the seal, the sheeting 8 passes between a pair of opposed cold air jets 13 supplied with cold air through a pipe 14.

Abstract: 1,061,049. Sack filling-machines. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Dec. 18, 1963 [Dec. 22, 1962], No. 49916/63. Heading B8C. An apparatus for filling sacks comprises a filling tube, sampling means, weighing means above the filling tube and means for inflating the sacks, control means being provided to initiate the operations of clamping the neck of the sack to the filling tube, inflating the sack, emptying the weighed goods from the weighing means into the sack. In one embodiment a pair of levers 8a, 8b are rotatably mounted on bearings 7 on the filling tube 1 which has a tapering hood 2 with an attached pipe 3 for sucking off dust. The levers are connected at one end by a roller 9 and at the other end one of the levers has a catch 10 which holds the lever in the upper or lower position of an arcuate slot 11. Mounted above the lever 8a is a lever 12 actuating a control valve 14. After placing a sack over the filling tube the roller 9 is lifted thus raising the lever 12 which opens the valve 14 and causes compressed air to flow to a diaphragm pressure cell 17. The pressure cell piston causes forward movement of a lever 18 which causes jaws 23a, 23b to clamp the sack against the filling tube. The lever 18 also actuates a switch 20 causing compressed air to be blown into the sack for a short time and the weighing means (not shown) to empty the goods into the sack. When the filling operation has been completed the roller 9 is returned to the lower position causing the clamping jaws 23a, 23b to return to their original position, the filled sack falling from the filling tube by its own weight. In other modifications the clamping jaws are operated by a double piston or two diaphragm pressure cells, each cell forcing one clamping jaw against the filling tube.

Abstract: 1,028,673. Filling bags; shoots. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. March 19, 1963, No. 10742/63. Headings B8C and B8S. A nozzle for filling valve bags has a lower cylindrical portion 5 (Fig. 1) cut-off on a slope at 5 and partly surrounded by a jacket 6, as shown in section in Fig. 2, to provide an air vent, and the nozzle is fed through its upper downwardly constricted end 2 which may contain a pear-shaped baffle 4 to direct the material close to the walls of the nozzle. The nozzle is preferably lined with polytetrafluorethylene. The jacket 6 preferably has a crescent-shaped flange 7 (Fig. 3, not shown) limiting the penetration of the nozzle into a bag. The nozzle may be fed from a feed weigher, and the bags may be supported during filling on an inclined conveyer belt which removes the bags after filling. Preferred proportions are given for the jacket 6.

Abstract: 980,085. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Dec. 11, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 44175/61. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] Plastic sheetings, such as polyethylene bags having great wall thickness and containing powders, are sealed by streams of heated compressed air directed from both sides while the sheets are held between steel bands. Four steel bands 21-24 are used, the upper and lower bands being spaced to the width of the seam required. Tension rolls 45, 46 are provided for the bands which are driven from a motor 25 and carried by metal discs 14, 16, 17, 19 mounted on a two-part hinged frame 1, 2. Located so as to direct jets of heated compressed air between upper and lower bands are nozzles 37, 38 and behind the jets are water-cooled metal jaws 39, 40 for cooling the bands. Between the nozzles 37, 38 and the jaws 39, 40 resiliently mounted pressing rolls 13, 15 are arranged to press the plies of sheeting together, thereby completing heat sealing even though dust particles may lie between the plies.

Abstract: 1,094,783. Sealing plastics bags. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. March 26, 1965 [March 28, 1964], No. 12861/65. Heading B8C. The open end of tubular plastics material (forming a bag) is trimmed straight and a closure strip is folded longitudinally into V- shape and placed over the open end, the inner surface of the strip and the outer surfaces of the end adjacent the strip are heated and pressure is applied to unite the strip with and close the end. Bags 73 are fed in between rollers 45-48 around which run conveyer belts 38, 39, 53, 54, the bag mouth being trimmed by rotary cutters 37, 37a, so that the cut-off piece 52 is laterally discharged by the uppermost conveyers 53, 54 and the trimmed bag continues to advance to beneath a flat closure strip 56 fed from a roll 55 around a guide roll 57 and brought into V-shape by wires 58. Two opposed wheels 59, 60 (59 being driven and 60 being mounted on a shaft 70 movable eccentrically about a shaft 14) grip together the strip and the trimmed bag and convey them to a heat sealing station, the eccentrically mounted shaft 70 being moved by a contact (not shown) operating when the leading edge of the bag reaches a point 74. Heated copper wedges 61, 61a, which are pivoted about horizontal axes (63), (63a), Fig. 4 (not shown), and rest normally in a lower position under the weight of heating coils (75), (75a), are raised by magnets (64), (64a) so that they contact the outer faces of the mouth of the bag and the two inner faces of the strip at the same time, a shaped metal sheet 65 serving as a support during the contact with the heating wedges. The strip is then gripped and pressed together by two spring-mounted wheels 67, 68 and conveyed out of the apparatus. A scissor member 76 cuts the closure strip immediately behind the closed bag. The seam may be air cooled by means of a blower.
