    Abstract: Before they are coated with the magnetisable material, the substrate plates are machined on a precision lathe in such a way that the annular surface (2) intended for the recording area is convexly curved on both sides of the plate. For this purpose, during machining, the substrate plate (1) is held on the lathe chuck (4) with a concave curvature of the annular surface and is machined off flat with a purely radial advancing motion of the cutting tool (11), or is held on a flat lathe chuck (21) and is machined off with an advancing motion of the tool (16) which corresponds to the desired convex curvature of the annular surface (2). In the case of the first of these two machining methods, after removal from the lathe chuck (4), the elastically deformed substrate plate relaxes to give a convexly curved annular surface.
