Abstract: The film undergoing the magnetisation process may be applied to both sides of the metallic disc. The film is a mixture of binding material and anisotropic magnetic particles and is applied on the disc in a liquid form. It is spread by centrifugal force, with the disc rotating at high speed. It is magnetised, hardened, ground and then polished. One pair of poles is so arranged that magnetism spreads into the symmetrical plane and forms another even shaped pole pair but of opposite polarity and which converges pointed to the symmetry plane. The distance between the magnetic crests is greater than that of the pole faces and the flux density greates near the poles. The position of the poles is adjustable; during the film application they move toward each other. With this method of film application the reading potential is improved by 50%.

Abstract: Magnetic recording material is prepd. by intensive mixing of needle-like magnetic pigment and a carrier liq. comprising a synthetic organic binder and a dispersing agent to a paste and subsequent drying and granulating to a free flowing pigment mixt. The pigment mixt. is conventionally mixed with a synthetic organic binder, solvent and opt. other additives to form a dispersion which is coated thinly and evenly with simultaneous alignment of the needle-like pigment onto a support and dried. The recording material has improved packing in the binder and improved alignment. In a example, Fe2O3 powder was mixed with a polyesterurethane, dried, granulated, dispersed in a vinyl chloride copolymer soln. and coated onto a PET support.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of rigid magnetic recording media by depositing a cobalt-containing ferromagnetic metal layer on a non-magnetic metallic base disc provided with a cured layer of binder which does not dissolve or swell in organic solvents and contains non-magnetic pigments, and which has been activated, before deposition of the ferromagnetic layer, by treatment with a solution of a palladium (O) complex in an organic solvent, followed by decomposition of this complex, to prepare it to receive the ferromagnetic metal layer which is produced by electroless deposition.

Abstract: The discs are faced using diamond tools whilst being held by vacuum onto a faceplate. The faceplate has a layer of resilient material on which the storage disc is seated during facing. The resilient material, e.g. rubber or plastics has a modulus of between 25 and 180 kp/cm2, a Shore A hardness between 30 and 90, a compression set according to DIN 53517 of below 10%, and good grindability. The thickness of the layer is pref. between 0.2 and 5 mm. Facing may be carried out in two stages with different resilient materials and intermediate stress-relieving of the discs.
