Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst composition which is suitable for a catalyst for production of methacrylic acid by gas phase oxidation of methacrolein by constituting a composition of Mo, P, V, K, Cu, Ce, Sb, Re, S, O in a specific ratio and, when used, convert methacrolein to methacrylic acid at an increasing rate. CONSTITUTION: The compositions of the formula: Mo12 Pa Vb X c X d X e Sbf Reg Sh On (X is K, Rb and/or Cs, X is Cu and/or Ag, X is Ce, B, Zr, Mn and/or Bi, a is 0.5-3.0, b is 0.01-3.0, c is 0.2-3.0, d is 0.01-2.0, e is 0-2.0, f is 0.01-2.0, g is 0-1.0, h is 0.001-0.5, n is a number determined by the valency and content of the elements different from oxygen in the formula) are used. The compositions can be used as excellent catalysts for preparing methacrylic acid by gas-phase oxidation of methacrolein, and when used, can convert methacrolein to methacrylic acid at an increasing selective ratio.
