Abstract: Polypyridinium annulenes (I) of formula X = monovalent anion or equiv. of polyvalent anion; n = 2 or more; R = H, 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy, aryl, 6-20C cycloalkyl, halogen, SO3H, NH2, aminoalkyl, or aminoaryl obtainable by reacting a 1,1-bis(3-dialkylamino-N,N-dimethyl prop-2-eniminium-2-yl)-4,4' bipyridinium salt with opt. substd. o-phenylene diamine are claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Electrodes for reversible electrical storage devices, nonlinear optics, paramagnetic materials, polyionomers for polyelectrolytes, chelating of metals, or catalysts, e.g., sensor activity and paramagnetic properties are shown when counterion X is Verdazylsulphonic acid or deriv. In an example, 0.38g (0.5 mmol) 1,1'-Bis(3-dimethylamino-N,N dimethylprop-2-eniminium 2-yl)-4,4' bipyridinium tetrakis(fluoroborate) (II) and 0.11 g (1 mmol) o-phenylene diamine (III) were heated for 1 hours in 10 ml 1:1 mixt. of glacial acetic acid and MeOH under reflux. Reaction mixt. was cooled, and ppt. was filtered off and washed with 1:1 glacial acetic acid-MeOH, water, MeOH and DMF. Yield 0.08 g (26%) black powder, m.pt. above 350 deg.C, mol.wt. from spectroscopic data of ratio end monovalently linked pyridinium) to middle gps., about 5,000.

Abstract: Polypyridino anils of formulae (I) and (II) are new, where in formulae (I) and (II) R1=H, 1-24C alkyl or alkoxy, Cl, Br, CF3, NO2 or NR3R4; R3 and R4=1-6C alkyl; R2=p- or m-phenyline; a 10-30C fused aromatic ring system (III), (where in formula (III) R5=bond, S, O, NH, CH2, CH=CH, CO, SO, SO2 or SS1). X=ClO4, BF4, AsF6, SbF6, PF6, PtCl4 or R6-phenyl-SO3; R6=1-12C alkyl; n=1-100. Also new are their acid addn. salts with HX, or for (II) the salt with Fe(CN6)4(-) as counterion. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) and (II) are electrically conductive materials when doped e.g. by anodic oxidn. in an electrolyte contg. a conductivity salt. They are also useful (not claimed) as sensors, opto-electronic switches or electrodes. Unlike polyanilines, (I) and (II) have well characterised structures and an extended pi-electron system, and are soluble in many organic solvents.

Abstract: New metal chelates (I) are claimed, which are obtd. by reacting aromatic tricarboxylic acids or derivs. with (hetero)aromatic amines of formula (II), where A = a 5-6 membered aromatic ring, opt. contg. 1-2 hetero-atoms; R1 = -COOH, -XNH2, -XNHR2 or a gp. of the formulae (III), (IV), (V), (VI), (VII), (VIII); where x = CO, CS, SO, SO2, C= NR3, -P(=O)-NH2 or -P(=O)-NHR3; R2-3 = 1-12C alkyl, 6-20C aryl or 7-20C arylalkyl; Y = CH2, O, S or NR2; and then complex formation by adding gp. IB, VIA, VIIA or VIII metal salts. Organic ferromagnets obtd. by converting (I) to nitrosyl cpds. are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in the prodn. of organic ferromagnets (claimed). The ferromagnets are esp. useful in microelectronics. The ferromagnets are lightweight and easily processed.
