Abstract: Prepn. of a catalyst for the polymerisation of olefins, the catalyst being obtd. from a Si contg. material (a), and alkyl gp. contg. metal organic cpd. (b), and a Cr cpd. (c) (1)(i) an Alcogel (a) of the empirical formula SiO2.-mAl2O3. nROH (m=0-2, n=a number which gives 1-85% ROH, R=3-8C alkyl) and (ii) an alkyl gp. contg. Al Cpd. (b) of formula R'pAl(OR")3-p (R'=1-8C alkyl, R"=1-8C open chain alkyl ro a ring closed 5-8C alkyl, p=1-3) are well mixed to form a solid phse reaction prod. (2) The prod. from (1) and a soln. of a Cr cpd. (c) (CrO3 or a cpd. convertible to CrO3 in stage (3)) are well mixed and the solvent evaporated. (3) The stage (2) prod. is held in a gas stream contg. >=10 vol. % of 0 for 10-400 minues at 600-1000 degrees C. In the catalyst, for 100 pts. wt. of (a) as SiO2, there are 0.1-10 pts. wt. of (b) as Al and 0.3-10 pts. wt. of (c) as CrO3. The prods. of stage (1) and (2) are dried and ground before further processing so that they show no wt. loss in 30 minutes at 100 degrees C and 10 Torr press., and have a particle diam. of 20-2000 mu m. The catalysts can be modified to allow properties of the polymer e.g. density melt index, G modulus, to be varied and they need not be removed from the polymers. The polymes are esp. suitable for the prepn. of small hollow body mouldings without melt fracture and weld lines and with a high stress crack corrosion resistance.

Abstract: Prodn. of an olefin polymerisation catalyst comprises first loading a finely-divided xerogel of formula SiO2. m-Al2O3 (I) with an Al alkoxide of formula R'pAl(OR")3-p (IIe(I) has particle dia. 20-2000 um; pore vol. 0.7-2.6 cc/gand surface 150-600 m2/g. In the formulae m = 0-2, R' = 1-8C alkyul; R" = acyclic 1-8C alkyl or cyclic 5-8C alkyl; p = 0-2. The prod. is then loaded with CrO3 (or a cpd. converted to CrO3 in the next stage) by treating with an aq. soln. of a Cr cpd. then evaporating the solvent. The prod. is then heated at 600-1000 degrees C for 10-400 min. in a dry stream of gas contg. >10 vol.% O2. The finished catalyst contains, per 100 wt. pts. (I) as SiO2, 0.1-10 wt. pts. (IIe as Al and 0.3-10 wt.% Cr as CrO3. Used esp. for (co)polymerising 2-8c alpha-monoolefins, partic. ethylene. The catalyst can be readily modified to vary the props. of the polymer e.g. increasing the (IIecontent increases the density, melt index and G-modulus.
