Abstract: Manufacture of polymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerization with a Ziegler catalyst system comprising (1) a catalyst component containing titanium and/or vanadium and (2) a particular compound of the metals aluminum, magnesium or zinc. The characteristic feature of the process according to the invention is that the catalyst component (1) containing titanium and/or vanadium is the solid-phase product (VII) contained by first (1.1) bringing a finely divided porous inorganic oxidic material (I), which has the formula Al2O3 or SiO2.aAl2O3, where a is a number from 0 to 2, into contact with an aluminum compound (II) dissolved in an organic solvent, to form a solid-phase product (III), then (1.2) bringing the solid-phase product (III) obtained in stage (1.1) into contact with a magnesium compound (IV), dissolved in an organic solvent, to form a solid-phase product (V), and finally (1.3) bringing the solid-phase product (V) obtained in stage (1.2) into contact with a compound (VI) of the transition metals titanium and/or vanadium to form a solid-phase product (VII). This process functions better than comparable conventional processes.

Abstract: In the prepn. of a modified Ti congt. component of a Ziegler catalyst for the polymerisation of 3-6C monoolefins by dry grinding in a vibratory ball mill (a) a Ti cpd. of formula tiCl3. nAlCl3 (n = 0 to 0.7) and (b) a P cpd. of formula OmPX3 in which m = O or 1, X = R, OR or NR2 and R is alkyl-, aryl, -alkaryl- or aralkyl with 24C using molar ratio of (a):(b) = 1:0.01 to 1:1, mill acceleration = 30 to80 m.sec.-2, the improvement comprises reacting the dry ground product in the absence of thinning agents and without grinding and in intimate contact with 0.05-100 times its wt. of an Al cpd. of formula (Alk)2 AlY at 0-125, pref. 55-70 degrees C. for 0.1-100 hr. (where alk is 1-12C alkyl, Y = Cl or Br esp. Cl). The resulting solid is isolated, washed with an inert organic solvent and dried.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of olefin polymers by polymerization of monoolefins using a silicic xerogel/chromium trioxide catalyst obtained by (1) synthesizing a particulate silicic xerogel, (2) doping said xerogel with chromium trioxide or a chromium compound capable of converting to chromium trioxide under the conditions of stage (3) and (3) heating the resulting product in a gas stream containing oxygen. The silicic xerogel/chromium trioxide catalyst used is one which has been obtained by (1) synthesizing the silicic xerogel in the first stage by (1.1) starting with a silicic hydrogel having a relatively high solids content, (1.2) extracting water from said hydrogel by means of an alkanol and/or alkanone until the organic liquid absorbs no further water, (1.3) extracting the organic liquid used in stage (1.2) from the resulting dehydrated gel saturated with said organic liquid by means of a hydrocarbon or oxohydrocarbon until said hydrocarbon or oxohydrocarbon absorbs no further organic liquid from stage (1.2), and (1.4) drying the resulting dehydrated gel saturated with hydrocarbon or oxohydrocarbon (xerogel formation), and (2) doping said xerogel in the second stage with the desired amount of chromium from a solution of chromium trioxide in an alkanone or solution of a chromium compound capable of converting to chromium trioxide under the conditions of stage (3) in an alkanol or alkanone with evaporation of the solvent.

Abstract: Filaments and fibers based on polypropylene or copolymers thereof having a content of from 10 to 90% by weight of bitumen and a process for their manufacture, in which a mixture based on polypropylene or copolymers thereof and containing from 10 to 90% by weight of bitumen is melt-spun and drawn. The filaments and fibers produced in the manner of the invention are suitable for the production of woven and non-woven fabrics for insulating purposes and carpet underlays.

Abstract: Polyolefins are made by polymerising 2-8 C alpha-mono-olefins at 60-160 degrees C and olefin pressures of 0.5-40 bar using silicic acid xerogel/CR2O3 catalysts made by (1) forming a finely divided silica xerogel with a particle size of 10 to 2000 mu m by (a) making a 10-25 wt. % solids (as SiO2) silicic acid hydrogel, (b) extracting water from the hydrogel with a 1-4 C alkanol and/or a 3-5 C alkanone until the org. liq. takes up no more water and (c) drying the dewatered gel, saturated with the org. liq. until no further wt. loss occurs on heating at 180 degrees C/10 Torr for 30 mins.; (2) mixing the resulting xerogel with solid, finely divided CR2O3 and heating at 100-300 degrees C/0.01-250 Torr until the xerogel has taken up 0.1-10 wt. % CR2O3 (calculated as Cr) and (3) treating the prod. for 10-1000 min. at 40-1100 degrees C in a moisture-free gas stream contg. >10 vol. % O2. The catalysts give high yields and high productivity, and the resulting polymers have relatively narrow particle size distribution, low fines content and a sufficiently high melt index when made in the absence of mol. wt. regulators.

Abstract: Ternary polypropylene compsns. consist of (1) 60-95wt.% polypropylene with intrinsic viscosity measured in decalin at 130 degrees C of 1-9 and density 0.80-0.92, (2) 3-30% copolymer with (melt flow index) MFI (190 degrees C, 2.16 kp) of 0.0-120, opt. crosslinked up to 100% gel content, from (2.1) 50-90wt.% of ethylene and (2.2)50-10% (meth)acrylate ester of a 1-8C alkanol, and (3) 2-30% polyethylene with MFI 0.01-20 and density 0.93-0.97. The compsns. are processed on usual machines into films, profiles, sheets, hollow articles, vehicle body parts, etc. Addn. of (3) to known mixts. of (1) and (2) gives materials with good toughness at low temps. and stiffness, together with excellent flow properties in processing.
