Abstract: Process for the removal of volatiles, in a single stage by vacuum evaporation, from polymer solutions obtained in the continuous solution polymerization of monomer mixtures containing acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The evaporation is effected in a devolatilizing zone in which the temperature of the polymer solution rises in its direction of flow. This process causes no damage to the polymers on account of decomposition products of the heat-sensitive nitrile monomers.

Abstract: 1348286 Incorporating grafted rubbers into thermoplastics material BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 29 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35617/71 Heading C3G A process for incorporating rubber into a thermoplastics material comprises precipitating a rubber latex, freeing the rubber mechanically of 10-98% of its initial water content so that the resulting rubber contains 2-50% by weight water, mixing the said rubber with the thermoplastics material at a temperature which is above the softening point of the thermoplastics materials, and removing the remainder of water during or after the incorporation. The thermoplastics material may be a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene, vinyl chloride or methyl methacrylate. Numerous rubbers are specified but it is preferred to use graft copolymers in which monomers forming rigid polymers are polymerized in aqueous emulsion on to a rubber base. The finished plastics material advantageously contains 5-60%, preferably 10-50%, by weight of the rubber worked into 95-40%, preferably 90-50%, by weight of thermoplastics material. The initial water removal may be carried out by filtration, pressing or centrifugation. Incorporation of the rubber into the thermoplastics material may be carried out in conventional mixing equipment, advantageously extruders or kneaders. The thermoplastics may be introduced into the mixing equipment as a melt. Alternatively it is possible to start from a dispersion of the thermoplastics material, to precipitate and partly dehydrate the same, and then to work it into the moist rubber. When an extruder is used it is advantageous to meter in the moist rubber first since this may be carried out under mild conditions without using superatmospheric conditions. After the thermoplastics material and rubber have passed through together the two components are mixed homogeneously together, at a temperature above the softening point of the thermoplastics material. The remaining water is removed by counterpressure or evaporation. In the example a styrene/acrylonitrile (70:30) copolymer is incorporated into a rubber latex produced by emulsion graft polymerization of 50 parts by weight of a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile (70 : 30) in the presence of 100 parts by weight of a butadiene/butyl acrylate (40 : 60) copolymer.
