Abstract: Process for the removal of volatiles, in a single stage by vacuum evaporation, from polymer solutions obtained in the continuous solution polymerization of monomer mixtures containing acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The evaporation is effected in a devolatilizing zone in which the temperature of the polymer solution rises in its direction of flow. This process causes no damage to the polymers on account of decomposition products of the heat-sensitive nitrile monomers.

Abstract: - 20- O.Z. 0050/37071 A thermoplastic molding material consists of from 10 to 90 parts by weight of a polycarbonate A and from 90 to 10 parts by weight of a graft copolymer B having a mean particle size of from 200 to 700 nm (d50 value of the integral mass distribution). The graft polymer B is formed from an elastomer (rubber) b1), which accounts for from 10 to 80% by weight, and a grafted shell b2), which accounts for from 90 to 20% by weight, the percentages in each case being based on B). The elastomer b1) is composed of from 50 to 99.9% by weight of an alkyl acrylate, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and from 0.1 to 5% by weight of a copolymerizable polyfunctional crosslinking monomer. The grafted shell b2) is produced in three stages and contains, as graft monomers, b2a1) from 5 to 40% by weight of a monoethylenically unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon of not more than 12 carbon atoms, in the first stage, b2a2) from 15 to 50% by weight of a mixture of a monoethylenically unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon of not more than 12 carbon atoms and a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 60:40, in the second stage, and b2a3) from 10 to 85% by weight of an alkyl (meth) acrylate in the third stage, the percentages in each case being based on b2).

Abstract: 1348286 Incorporating grafted rubbers into thermoplastics material BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 29 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35617/71 Heading C3G A process for incorporating rubber into a thermoplastics material comprises precipitating a rubber latex, freeing the rubber mechanically of 10-98% of its initial water content so that the resulting rubber contains 2-50% by weight water, mixing the said rubber with the thermoplastics material at a temperature which is above the softening point of the thermoplastics materials, and removing the remainder of water during or after the incorporation. The thermoplastics material may be a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene, vinyl chloride or methyl methacrylate. Numerous rubbers are specified but it is preferred to use graft copolymers in which monomers forming rigid polymers are polymerized in aqueous emulsion on to a rubber base. The finished plastics material advantageously contains 5-60%, preferably 10-50%, by weight of the rubber worked into 95-40%, preferably 90-50%, by weight of thermoplastics material. The initial water removal may be carried out by filtration, pressing or centrifugation. Incorporation of the rubber into the thermoplastics material may be carried out in conventional mixing equipment, advantageously extruders or kneaders. The thermoplastics may be introduced into the mixing equipment as a melt. Alternatively it is possible to start from a dispersion of the thermoplastics material, to precipitate and partly dehydrate the same, and then to work it into the moist rubber. When an extruder is used it is advantageous to meter in the moist rubber first since this may be carried out under mild conditions without using superatmospheric conditions. After the thermoplastics material and rubber have passed through together the two components are mixed homogeneously together, at a temperature above the softening point of the thermoplastics material. The remaining water is removed by counterpressure or evaporation. In the example a styrene/acrylonitrile (70:30) copolymer is incorporated into a rubber latex produced by emulsion graft polymerization of 50 parts by weight of a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile (70 : 30) in the presence of 100 parts by weight of a butadiene/butyl acrylate (40 : 60) copolymer.

Abstract: - 20 - O.Z. 0050/37072 A thermoplastic molding material consists of a polycarbonate A and a graft copolymer B, the latter consisting of an elastomer (rubber) b1) and a shell b2) grafted onto the elastomer. The elastomer b1) contains, as copolymerized units, from 35 to 100% by weight of a diene from the group consisting of the conjugated dienes of 4 or 5 carbon atoms, and can contain, as copolymerized units, from 0 to 65% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The shell b2) is obtained in a conventional manner by successive polymerization of the monomers constituting the shell, in two process steps, in the presence of the elastomer b1); in a first process step, from 10 to 90% by weight of a mixture of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which differ from the said hydrocarbon, in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 60:40, are first incorporated as copolymerized units, followed by the polymerization of from 90 to 10% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or of the alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The molding material is used for the production of shaped articles.

Abstract: An ABS molding material comprising a copolymer matrix A in which is dispersed a graft copolymer B. The graft copolymer B is composed of styrene and acrylonitrile as the grafting monomers on polybutadiene as a grafting base and has a mean particle diameter of from 0.2 to 0.45 .mu.m (d50value of the cumulative mass distribution). The gel component, isolated from the molding materials, is required to have a spin-spin relaxation time of from 0.7 to 1.5 .mu.s, so that the molding materials have a high surface gloss coupled with good notched impact strength even at low temperatures. The copolymer A can be a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile or a terpolymer additionally containing .alpha.-methylstyrene. The molding material can furthermore contain conventional additives. The molding materials according to the invention can be employed where great toughness coupled with high gloss is required, as in household appliances and in the automotive industry.
