Abstract:
In the manufacture of aqueous dispersions of polymers of monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters by emulsion copolymerization, polymerization is effected in the presence of a mixture of (a) non-ionic emulsifiers, (b) anionic emulsifiers, (c) a protective colloid based on an N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer and (d) a hydroxyl-containing protective colloid.

1440768 Aqueous dispersions of ester polymers BASF AG 15 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 52977/73 Heading C3P An aqueous dispersion of a polymer of a mono-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic ester is prepared by emulsion polymerization of said ester in the presence of (a) 0À05 to 7% of a non-ionic emulsifier (b) 0À05 to 5% of an anionic emulsifier (c) 0À01 to 5% of a protective colloid based on an N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer and (d) 0À01 to 7% of a hydroxyl containing protective colloid which is a polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble partially saponified vinyl acetate polymer or a mixture thereof, said percentages being by weight of the total weight of monomer. The non-ionic emulsifier may be an adduct of 25 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of pisooctyl phenol, C 18 fatty alcohol or a fatty alcohol mixture of C 16 -C 19 alcohols, 50% of which' are saturated, and the anionic emulsifier may be the sodium salt of the sulphuric acid monoester of the adduct of 25 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of p-isooctyl or p-nonyl phenol. Examples describe the production of copolymers of (1) vinyl acetate, vinyl 2-ethylhexanate and crotonic acid, (2) ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinylsulphonate, (3) vinyl acetate, dibutyl maleate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (4) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (5) vinyl acetate, n-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (6) as (5) plus butanediol-1,4-diacrylate, and (7) vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid.
