Abstract: Spherical, expandible styrene polymers are obtd. by suspending rod-shaped granules of styrene polymers, opt. mixed with 10-90 wt.% of other thermoplastic synthetics, in water contg. a suspending agent, and keeping the granules moving, pref. by stirring, while heating the suspension at above the softening point, for >30 mins. (1-5 hours) and at a press of is not >14 bars (7-10 bars). Granules of uniform size can be obtd. in any required amt. and dimension. Prods. of grain dia. 0.5-0.6 mm, suitable for prodn. of thin-walled goods, can be prepd. Moulds can be filled easily with the spherical granules. The process is esp. suitable for preparing light-fast, pigmented expandible styrene polymers. Opt. the initial granules may contain additives, but no blowing agent; the spherical particles are later impregnatred with the blowing agent.

Abstract: Process for lowering blowing agent content of expandable beads of styrene (co)polymer contg. >=50 wt. % styrene comprises stirring fractions of bead particles contg. 2-12 (6-8) wt. % blowing agent or mixts. of such fractions in liq. phase, either without applied press. at 40-70 (50) degrees C or under 3-10 (4-6) bar at 90-130 (90-110) degrees C. Treatment is continued until desired blowing agent quantity is achieved esp. 1-6 wt. %. Press. and temp. are determined so as to accelerate blowing agent diffusion from polymer particles while avoiding partial foaming of material. Uniform prods. are formed having a uniform foam structure is prefoamed condition. Process may take place in the presence of an (in) organic dispersant. Blowing agents sused are lower-boiling opt. halogenated aliphatic cpds. or cycloaliphatic cpds. which do not attack polymer and which boil below styrene polymer b. pt. The styrene (co)polymer particles contain further additives, e.g. plasticisers, stabilisers, liquids, soluble dyes or pigments or flameproofing agents.
