Abstract: Purificn. of waste water generated during mfr. of styrene bead polymers (I) in presence of vinyl pyrrolidone of vinyl alcohol polymers as suspension stabilisers, comprises adding a pptg. agent (II) then removing the sepd. suspended solids. (II) is 0.05-3, esp. 0.1-1 pt. per 100 pts. waste water of a water-soluble amide-NH4 or diNH4 salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer of up to 50% maleic anhydride content which has Staudinger index (in DMF at 25 degrees C) 5-150, pref. 10-60 cc./g. The pH of the water is adjusted to 3 with inorganic acid. Pref. (II) is added as a 0.1-20, esp. 1-10 wt. % aq. soln. or dispersion. Almost complete removal of suspended solids is economically achieved leaving clear water of very low residual organic C content.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of styrene homopolymers or copolymers by suspension polymerization of monomers which contain dissolved styrene polymers from a preceding suspension polymerization, in the presence of sparingly soluble metal phosphates as suspension stabilizers, wherein, before the polymerization is started, the monomer phase is dispersed in an aqueous phase, containing a dissolved mineral acid, preferably phosphoric acid, at from 10 DEG to 80 DEG C. for from 5 to 120 minutes, after which the sparingly soluble metal phosphate is formed in situ in the aqueous phase. The process is particularly suitable for the preparation of expandable styrene polymers, in which case a volatile blowing agent is added to the suspension before, during or after polymerization.

Abstract: Expandable polystyrene particle prepn. by suspension polymerisation of styrene and opt. further co-monomers in the presence of organic suspension stabilisers and blowing agents, takes place in the presence of 0.001-0.4 (0.01-0.2) wt. %, w.r.t. aq. phase of polymerisation batch, of phosphates and/or carbonates of Ca and/or Mg. Method is used in prodn. of foamed articles, by heating pre-foamed compsn. in moulds and sintering. Particles obtd. have a low internal water content, e.g. 0.3-0.8 wt. %. Agglomeration of single particles on foaming is prevented. Waste water pollution by organic cpds. can be reduced by 60% w.r.t. standard processes.

Abstract: Purificn. of waste liquor (I) from the prodn. of styrene bead polymers in the presence of vinylpyrrolidone polymers or vinyl alcohol polymers as suspension stabilisers involves addn. of precipitant and sepn. of the sediment formed 100 pts. (I) are treated with 0.05-3 esp. 0.1-1 pts. water-soluble amide-ammonium or diammonium salt (II) of styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer contg. max. 50 mole% maleic, anhydride, having a Staudinger index of 5-150, pref. 10-60 cm3/g in dimethylformamide at 25 degrees C. An inorganic acid is then added to pH below 3. The improvement comprises the use of (II) contg. 2-40, pref. 5-20 wt.% copolymerised (meth)acrylic acid. The treated liquor is clearer. (II) is added in the form of a 0.1-20 pref. 1-20 wt.% aq. soln. or dispersion. In an example, the addn. of (II) to (I) and adjustment to pH2 reduced the total organic C content of the filtrate from 59,200 to 110 mg C/l and the chemical oxygen demand from 103,200 to 380 mg O2/l.
