Abstract: A process for the preparation of butenediol diacetate by reacting butadiene with oxygen and acetic acid or with a compound which liberates acetic acid under the reaction conditions, over a solid catalyst which contains a platinum metal and one or more elements of main group 5 or 6, in the presence of butanediol diacetate, butanediol monoacetate, butanediol or a mixture of these, and the use of the butenediol diacetate, thus obtained, to prepare butane-1,4-diol by hydrogenating and then hydrolyzing the diacetate.

Abstract: Process for prepn. of butanediol-1,4-diacetate, (I), by hydrogenation of trans-butene-2-diol-1,4-diacetate (II), or mixtures contg. (II), uses a catalyst (IV) contg. Ni and Al oxide, which can be prepd. from the cpd. Ni6Al2(OH)16CO3.4H2O, (III), by heating and reduction. (I) is a starting material for prodn. of butanediol and tetrahydrofuran and can also be used for incorporating the butanediol gp. into other cpds. Hydrogenation of the trans-isomer, or of cis-trans-isomer mixt., proceeds smoothly, under mild conditions with sufficiently high catalyst loading. (IV) has higher activity than Raney Ni, already at lower temps.

Abstract: 1501004 Oxidative esterification catalysts BASF AG 2 May 1975 [3 May 1974] 18368/75 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprising palladium and at least one element, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, selenium and tellurium is used for the preparation of butenediol diacetate by reaction of butadiene with oxygen and acetic acid. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier e.g. active charcoal, silica gel, silicic acid, alumina, clay, bauxite, magnesia, kieselguhr and pumice. The carrier may be introduced into mixed solutions of the salts followed by evaporation and reduction, or a precipitant e.g. alkali metal hydroxide, is added followed by reduction. Examples describe the evaporation and reduction of palladium chloride and tellurium dioxide on active charcoal.

Abstract: Diesters of >=4 C unsatd. glycols are prepd. by reacting dienes having a C-structure corresponding to that of the glycols, pref. conjugated dienes having general formula R1R2C=CR3-CR4=CR5R6 (I) (where R1 to R6 are H or 1-6C alkyl) with an esp. 1-20C aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic carboxylic acid, (II), and supplying the energy required for reaction by treatment with gamma-radiation, pref. from a 60Co-source, opt. in presence of a catalyst. By carrying out reaction in absence of O2, unreacted diene need not be separated from unreacted O2.

Abstract: Prepn. of esters of 1,2-glycols comprises reacting an olefin with O2 and a carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is a cpd. derived from titanic acid and a low-mol. wt. alcohol and/or carboxylic acid. The catalyst is pref. obtd. by reacting Ti (Hal)4 with an aliphatic mono-or poly-ol and/or a carboxylic acid (anhydride) e.g. of formula Ti (OR)m(OAc)n (where R is 1-20C alkyl, m and n = 1-3 each, and Ac is an acyl gp) or Ti (OR')4 (where R' is 1-20C alkyl). Used as intermediates, solvents, plasticisers and surfactants. The esters are formed with high selectivity and at increased rate, avoiding the use of the normal highly corrosive halogenated catalysts.
