Abstract: A process for the preparation of butenediol diacetate by reacting butadiene with oxygen and acetic acid or with a compound which liberates acetic acid under the reaction conditions, over a solid catalyst which contains a platinum metal and one or more elements of main group 5 or 6, in the presence of butanediol diacetate, butanediol monoacetate, butanediol or a mixture of these, and the use of the butenediol diacetate, thus obtained, to prepare butane-1,4-diol by hydrogenating and then hydrolyzing the diacetate.

Abstract: (I), prepn. by reaching butenediol esters, (II), with at least equiv. quantities of HCN at 60-160 degrees C., takes place in aq. solns. of CuBr contg. alkali bromide, under pressures >=2 (pref. 2-20) bar. Mol. ratio CuBr to (II) is (0.3-0.6) : 1. The alkali bromide is esp. NaBr. The aq. solns. pref. also contain NH4Br and up to 10 wt.% HBr. (I) can be hydrogenated to hexamethylene diamine, used in polyamide prodn. On replacing previously used CuCl + alkali halide by CuBr + alkali bromide, yields of (I) can be increased, e.g. from 30% to >80%. Process can be effected economically on a large scale. Aq. solns. are handled more easily than fused salts. (I) is easily separated.

(I) is a starting material for prodn. of butanediol and tetrahydrofuran and can also be used for incorporating the butanediol gp. into other cpds. Hydrogenation of the trans-isomer, or of cis-trans-isomer mixt., proceeds smoothly, under mild conditions with sufficiently high catalyst loading. (IV) has higher activity than Raney Ni, already at lower temps.

Abstract: 1501004 Oxidative esterification catalysts BASF AG 2 May 1975 [3 May 1974] 18368/75 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprising palladium and at least one element, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, selenium and tellurium is used for the preparation of butenediol diacetate by reaction of butadiene with oxygen and acetic acid. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier e.g. active charcoal, silica gel, silicic acid, alumina, clay, bauxite, magnesia, kieselguhr and pumice. The carrier may be introduced into mixed solutions of the salts followed by evaporation and reduction, or a precipitant e.g. alkali metal hydroxide, is added followed by reduction. Examples describe the evaporation and reduction of palladium chloride and tellurium dioxide on active charcoal.
