    Abstract: Cellulose acetate, viscose or polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile are spin-dyed, and polystyrene or linear polyamides are bulk-dyed, with a dyestuff of the formula:- wherein A is a group of the formula:- where R is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical and X, Y and Z are identical or different monovalent radicals such as the group A, hydrogen, amino, nitro, alkoxy, hydroxyl or acylamino. The bulk-dyed materials may also contain titanium dioxide. Particularly preferred dyestuffs for polystyrene are dyes of the above formula where R is phenyl and X, Y and Z are each hydrogen, benzoylamino or the group where R is phenyl.ALSO:The invention comprises dyestuffs of the formula in which A is the group where R is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical and X, Y and Z are identical or different monovalent radicals, such as the group A, hydrogen, amino, nitro, alkoxy, hydroxyl or acylamino. The dyes are made by reacting an anthraquinone of the formula in which X, Y and Z are identical or different monovalent radicals such as hydrogen, amino, nitro, alkoxy, hydroxyl or acylamino, with a compound of the formula where E is a halogen atom, at a temperature of 50 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. A nitro group present in the anthraquinone nucleus of the product may be converted to amino. The dyes may be used in lacquers, for spin-dyeing cellulose acetate, viscose or polyacrylonitrile and/or copolymers of acrylonitrile, and for bulk-dyeing polystyrene or linear amides giving red, orange, violet and blue-green shades (see Group IV (a)).
