    Abstract: Pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-2,4(1H,3H)-diones are disclosed, having formulas (Ia) and (Ib), in which R and R stand for H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl; R stands for H, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; R stands for H, alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, (alkylthio)carbonyl, alkoxy(thiocarbonyl), (alkylthio)thiocarbonyl, cyano or aminocarbonyl; or R and R represent together alkylene, alkenylene or 1,2-phenylene; R stands for H, alkyl, cyano, C(O)R ; R stands for alkyl, possibly substituted aralkenyl, aryl or hetaryl, CH2R , alkoxycarbonyl, (alkylthio)carbonyl, alkoxy(thiocarbonyl), (alkylthio)thiocarbonyl, OH, SH, alkoxy, alkylthio, NH2, alkylamino, NHCXR , NHSO2R ; R and R represent together substituted alkylene, alkenylene or 1,2-phenylene, which may also contain carbonyl or thiocarbonyl groups; R stands for H, alkyl, OH, SH, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkoxycarbonyl, (alkylthio)carbonyl, alkoxy(thiocarbonyl), (alkylthio)thiocarbonyl, NH2 alkylamino, dialkylamino, possibly substituted aryl or arylamino; R stands for halogen, OH, SH, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkoxycarbonyl, (alkylthio)carbonyl, alkoxy(thiocarbonyl), (alkylthio)thiocarbonyl or the formula (a); R stands for alkyl, halogen alkyl, NR R or OR ; R stands for alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl; R stands for halogen, OH, SH, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkyl, nitro or amino; X stands for oxygen or sulphur. Also disclosed are the salts of compounds (Ia) and (Ib) that can be used in agriculture and that contain nitrogen or hydroxy substituants, as well as herbicides that contain 2-[4-(hetero)-aryloxy]-phenoxyacetic acid or propionic acid derivates and/or cyclohexenone derivates as active herbicidal substances and substituted pyrido[2,3-d[pyrimidin-2,4(1H, 3H)-diones, as well as the salts of (Ia) or (Ib) as antidotes when acid end groups or basic nitrogen atoms are present.

    Abstract: Prodn. comprises (a) treating a benzo isothiazole deriv. of formula (II) with a base; (b) reacting the resultant o-mercapto benzonitrile deriv. of formula (III) with a halomethyl cpd. of the formula Hal-CH2-R (IV); (c) treating the resultant 2'-cyanophenyl mercapto acetic acid deriv. of formula (V) with a base; (d) treating the resultant benzo(b)thiophene-2-carboxylic acid deriv. of formula (VI) with an acid; and (e) oxidising the resultant thio indoxyl deriv. of formula (VII) conventionally. New thioindigo cpds. are of formula (IA) and new o-mercapto benzonitrile derivs. (IIIA), 2'-cyanophenyl mercapto acetic acid derivs. (VA) and benzo(b)-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid derivs. (VIA) and thio indoxyl derivs. (VIIA) are of the given formulae with the same substits. as (IA): ring A has 0-4 substits. of 1-5C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxy carboxyl, (di(1-5C))-alkylamino, phenyl, benzoyl, COOH, CN, NO2, NH2, OH and halogen and/or an condensed benzene ring, opt. substd. by 1-5C alkoxy, NO2, NH2 or OH; Hal = Cl, Br or I; R = COOH, a carboxylate anion, CN, 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl or aminocarbonyl. In (IA) and the other new cpds.: (a) R1 = Cl, R2 and R3 = H, Cl or Br and R2 not = H if R1 and R3 = Cl; or (b) R1 = CN, R2 = NH2 and R3 = H; or (c) R1 = H, R2 = NO2 and R3 = H, Cl or Br. USE/ADVANTAGE - (IA) are used for pigmenting lacquers, printing inks and plastics and for dyeing cellulosic textile material (claimed). The prepn. is esp. useful for producing (IA). It is economical, has a wide range of applications and forms (I) of high quality. It avoids difficulties in introducing specific substits. and environmental pollution in the prodn. of specific aniline derivs. normally used as starting material. (IA) are yellow, red, violet or brown pigments or vat dyestuffs with improved properties for application.
