Abstract: Mixed acid (H2SO4-HNO3) or H2SO4 contaminated with nitration prods. is worked up by simultaneous addn. of the impure acid and N oxide or nitrosyl cpds. to 60-100 wt.% H2SO4 (H2SO4 sump) at 140-350, pref. 200-280 degrees C. Denitrification and the removal of large amts. of stable organic nitro cpds. take place simultaneously. Even by-prods. of nitration which are resistant to boiling H2SO4 are oxidised completely. Pref., part of the vapour given off by the acid is condensed and added to the sump, to provide the N oxide or nitrosyl cpds. The process can be operated continuously or batchwise.

Abstract: High-strength nitric acid contaminated by nitration products is introduced into from 80 to 100 per cent by weight strength sulphuric acid having a temperature of 200 to 300 DEG C. At the same time, the sulphuric acid is admixed with sulphuric acid containing nitrogen oxides or a nitrosyl compound. The organic components contained in the nitric acid are oxidised into water, carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide. The distillate obtained is a nitric acid which is free of organic components and which can again be processed to give high-strength nitric acid.
