Abstract: One-stage process results in complete removal of Cl2, COCl2 and HCl from effluent gases produced during the mfr. of Al by reaction of alumina or bauxite with Cl2 in the presence of CO or C. The purification is carried out using a 0.1-30 wt.% FeCl2 soln. having a pH between -0.7 and +1.5 pref. 0-1.0. between room temp. and the boiling point. The spent FeCl2 soln. is pref. regenerated with iron scrap and recycled.

Abstract: Aq. AlCl3 solns, esp. those remaining after Friedel-Craft synthesis, are economically converted back to AlCl3 for re-use, by spraying onto a fluidised bed of aluminium oxychloride at 70-150 (95-115) degrees C. The product is then heated at 400-800 (400-600) degrees C to yield Al2O3 contg. residual Cl. The grain size, being coarse, is esp. suited for chlorination, with CoCl2. Pref. the solns. to be treated contain >=20 wt.% AlCl3, but the process is effective for any AlCl3 content.
