Abstract: A process for the catalyzed partial gas phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid comprises processing a reaction mixture comprising acrolein, molecular oxygen and at least one inert gas in a molar ratio of O 2 to C 3H 4O of at least 0.5 in a reaction step using a fixed catalyst bed comprising a multi metal oxide containing Mo and V whereby the fixed catalyst bed comprises two separate temperature zones A and B arranged in series. A process for the catalyzed partial gas phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid comprises processing a reaction mixture comprising acrolein, molecular oxygen and at least one inert gas in a molar ratio of O 2 to C 3H 4O of at least 0.5 in a reaction step using a fixed catalyst bed. The catalyst comprised a multi metal oxide containing Mo and V whereby the fixed catalyst bed comprises two separate temperature zones A and B arranged in series. The temperature zones are maintained at 230-320[deg]C, such that the volume specific activity within a fixed catalyst zone is essentially constant and has a step-wise increase in the flow direction of the aqueous reaction mixture by transfer from one fixed catalyst zone to the other. A conversion of 45-85 mol.% acrolein is achieved in zone A; an acrolein conversion of at least 90 mol.% with selectivity to acrylic acid of at least 90 mol.% achieved by a single pass through the total fixed catalyst bed with flow through A followed by B. The catalyst bed loading of acrolein is at least 70 Nl acrolein per liter of catalyst bed per hour; the difference between the maximum temperatures in both zones A and B is at least 0[deg]C; whereby the transition from temperature zone A to temperature zone B does not occur with a transfer from one fixed catalyst zone to another fixed catalyst zone.
