Abstract: The polymerization of unsaturated compounds using alkali metals or organo-alkali metal compounds as initiators, is discontinued by the addition of a half-ester of phthalic acid or a half-ester of a derivative of phthalic acid, e.g. tetrahydrophthalic acid or endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid. The additional use of a small quantity of water is also advantageous. Monomers specified are styrene, methyl styrenes, dimethyl styrene, aminostyrenes, vinyl naphthalene, methacrylic acid esters, isoprene, butadiene and dimethyl butadiene. The materials used n the polymerization reaction and the termination thereof are preferably free of oxygen. Polymer may be recovered by distilling off solvent or by the addition of methanol.
