Abstract: Polymers having low glass temperatures are prepared by homopolymerizing or copolymerizing an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and an alcohol of the formula NC-(CH2)n-OH wherein n is an integer of from 4 to 8. The acid component of the cyanoalkyl ester may be, for example, acrylic, methacrylic, a -chloroacrylic, a -cyanoacrylic, itaconic, citraconic, maleic or fumaric acid. Mixtures of the cyano-esters may be used, e.g. a mixture of the d -cyano-butyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. Comonomers for the cyano-esters include other esters of the acids mentioned above and also nitriles and amides of such acids, vinyl esters, vinyl aromatic compounds, olefins, dienes, vinyl and vinylidene halides, and heterocyclic compounds containing vinyl groups. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, suspension, emulsion or solution using initiators such as peroxides or azo compounds. The polymers can be used for the production of mouldings, sheets, films, lacquer coatings, laminates and impregnations. Examples illustrate the polymerization of (a) d -cyanobutyl acrylate, and (b) d -cyanobutyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate in acetone using azodiisobutyronitrile initiator, the copolymerization of (b) being effected in the additional presence of dodecyl mercaptan and triphenyl phosphate; another example illustrates the polymerization of d -cyanobutyl acrylate or methacrylate, together with butadiene, in aqueous emulsion at pH 9, containing an alkyl sulphonate and sodium tripolyphosphate, and in the presence of potassium persulphate initiator to produce an elastomeric spongy product.

Abstract: The polymerization of unsaturated compounds using alkali metals or organo-alkali metal compounds as initiators, is discontinued by the addition of a half-ester of phthalic acid or a half-ester of a derivative of phthalic acid, e.g. tetrahydrophthalic acid or endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid. The additional use of a small quantity of water is also advantageous. Monomers specified are styrene, methyl styrenes, dimethyl styrene, aminostyrenes, vinyl naphthalene, methacrylic acid esters, isoprene, butadiene and dimethyl butadiene. The materials used n the polymerization reaction and the termination thereof are preferably free of oxygen. Polymer may be recovered by distilling off solvent or by the addition of methanol. Specification 804,081 is referred to.

Abstract: Expanded styrene polymers are produced by mixing styrene, or a mixture of at least 80% by weight of styrene with at least one other anionically polymerizable unsaturated monomeric compound, with an organo-alkali metal catalyst and such an amount of dimethyl ether and/or tetrahydrofuran and/or dioxane, in the absence of water and oxygen, that the heat of polymerization liberated during the polymerization of the monomers is sufficient to heat the polymer to a temperature above its softening point and to evaporate the ether, and the polymer obtained is then homogeneously mixed with 2 to 15% by weight of an easily volatile organic halogen compound or a mixture of an easily volatile aliphatic hydrocarbon and a small amount of a compound which will deactivate the organo-alkali metal catalyst, at temperatures above the softening point of the polymer, and the pressure is released. Suitable catalysts are naphthalene sodium, phenyl sodium and butyl lithium, and suitable expanding agents are methyl chloride, propane and butane, the hydrocarbons being used in conjunction with, e.g. oxalic acid or ethylene glycol. Other monomers suitable for copolymerization with the styrene are vinyltoluenes, 1,3-butadiene and isoprene.
