Abstract: New pyrazoline optical brighteners are of formula (I): (where M is H or a cation equiv., R1 is H or Cl and R2 is H or Me). (I) are used esp. for natural or synthetic polyamides, e.g. wool, silk, nylon or polyamide-6, and also for cotton. (I) can also be used as additives in detergent and bleaching compsns. Brilliant brightened effects obtd. have high whiteness, fastness to light and washing. (I) have high colour strength. In an example, (I; R1=R2=H; M = Na) was prepd. by condensing 4-hydrazinophenyl-3'-hydroxypropene-2'-sulphone with 4-Cl-beta-chloropropiophenone and reacting prod. with Na sulphite.
