Abstract: A photopolymerizable composition which contains one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds and from 0.2 to 20% by weight (based on the unsaturated compound(s)) of a photoinitiator, with or without conventional additives, the photoinitiator being a mixture of one or more aromatic carbonyl compounds of the general formula (A) (A) where Ar is an ortho-arylene radical which may or may not be substituted by one or more radicals R1 to R4, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are identical or different and each is H, alkyl or 1 to 5 carbon atoms, phenyl, halogen, alkoxy of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, alkaryl of 7 to 11 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 11 carbon atoms or -CO2R9, where R9 is alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1, and an amine, with or without an aromatic carbonyl compound which differs from (A).

Abstract: Photopolymerisable binders contain an olefinically unsatd. monomer and opt. polymer components and a photosensitiser consisting of 4,4'-bis-morpholino-benzophenone (I). The binders pref. also contain a known photosensitiser, esp. benzophenone or a deriv. with low absorption in the 300-380 nm range. The monomers pref. contain >=2 C=C bonds, e.g. oli- and poly- (meth)acrylates, which may be mixed with 5-50 (5-30) wt.% monomers contg. 1 C=C bond. Used in printing inks, coatings, printing plates, etc. They are less toxic, more soluble in organic solvents and more compatible with monomers than is Michler's ketone, allowing highly-pigmented UV-drying printing inks to be made with much improved brilliance.

Abstract: Prodn. of new acrylic, asymmetrical monoacetals (I) of aromatic diketones (II) of the formulae A'-CO-C(OR')(OR")-A" (I) and A'-CO-CO-A" (II) (where A' and A" are aromatic gps. and R' and R" are ppt. substd. 1-12C hydrocarbyl gps.) involves reacting (II) with an alkylating agent of the formula (R')nX and an alcoholate of the formula (R"O)mMe (in which n and m are 1, 2 or 3, X is a mono- to tri-basic acid gp. and Me is a main gp. I-III metal) in an organic solvent (III). (I) are used as photoinitiators for photocurable compsn., e.g. for the photopolymerisation of olefinically unsatd. monomer (mixts) and the photocure of coating compsns. based on unsatd. polyester resins and compsns. used for photoresists or photopolymer printing plates. Rapid polymerisation or cure occurs, giving scratch-proof coatings with min. discoloration. In an example, benzil methyl benzyl monoacetal was prepd. by reacting benzil with benzyl chloride and NaOMe in dimethylformamide at room temp.
