Abstract: Soln. for the selective stripping of Cu, Ni or Co layers from the surface of Zn or Al alloy articles in order to recover these metals and to allow the articles to be replated without further treatment consists of 10-100 g/l aromatic nitro cpd. e.g. Na salt of nitrobenzenesulphonate, contg. 0.1% Cl and 1% SO42-, 50-200 g/l of a cpd. where X = NH2, ONH4 or OH; 0.5-5 g/l of a sulphur cpd. e.g. thiosulphate; and 1-50 g/l pri., sec. or tert. ortho-phosphate, borate or silicate. The pH of the soln. is controlled at 6.8-11.5 at 60-70 degrees C. 2 mu of Ni of Co and 0.5 mu Cu per hr. can be removed.
