Abstract: Isobutylenediurea is prepared by reacting aqueous urea solutions containing 60 to 90% by weight of urea and having a pH of 2.5 to 4 with isobutyraldehyde at temperatures of 40-90 DEG C and neutralising the reaction mixture obtained to a pH of 5 to 8. The reaction is carried out in a reaction zone while maintaining a mean dwell time of 3 to 10 minutes and a dwell-time behaviour characterised by a base stone number of 12 to 26. The reaction mixture obtained is neutralised in an immediately adjacent neutralisation zone while maintaining the same dwell time and the same dwell-time behaviour.
