Abstract: Polyphenylene cpds. of formula (I) are claimed; R = H, Ph, naphthyl, methoxyphenyl, phenoxyphenyl, thiophenyl, phenylthiophenyl or 1-12C alkoxy; X = direct bond, O, S, CO, CONH, or COO; n = degree of polymerisation. (I) are prepd. e.g. by polycondensation of p, p'-dihalo-terphenyls and corresp. OH, COOH or COMe cpds. or by reaction of 1,3-bis-(4-bromophenyl)-acetone with benzil to give 2,5-di(4-bromophenyl) -3,4-diphenyl-cyclopentadienone, followed by polymerisation and reaction of the in-chain cyclopentadienone gps. with norbornadiene or acetylenes. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention provides new polyphenylenes which are soluble and fusible and have very high thermal stability. (0/0)

Abstract: Thienylphenylenes of formula (I) are new: R1, R2, R4, R5 = H or opt. F, Cl or Br substd. thienyl or 6-20C aryl; and R3, R6 = H, F, Cl, Br, or opt. F, Cl or Br substd. thienyl or 6-20C aryl, with the provision that at least one of R1-R6 is an opt. substd. thienyl gp. Polymers of (I) are also claimed. (I) are pref. prepd. by Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadienones with alkynes or norbornadiene. Polymeric thienyl phenylenes are pref. prepd. via oxidative chemical or electrochemical coupling reactions of (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used as electrically conductive materials and for the prepn. of electrically conductive thienylphenylene polymers (claimed). (I) are stable to oxygen and can be converted to defined high mol. wt. prods. by means of a simple reaction.
