Abstract: Organometallic compounds (I) with a metal N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-diamino structure (A) are used in the production of polymers in a liquid medium by free radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) with free radical polymerization initiator(s) in the presence of organometallic compound(s) in a liquid medium. Organometallic compounds (I) with a metal N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-diamino structure of formula (A) are used in the production of polymers in a liquid medium by free radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) with free radical polymerization initiator(s) in the presence of organometallic compound(s) in a liquid medium; Me = a metal ion; -.-.- = a covalent bond or a covalent bridge with 1-3 atoms, excluding substituents; - = a covalent bond to an adjacent atom Independent claims are also included for: (a) polymers in a liquid medium containing organometallic compound(s) (I); and (b) polymers in a liquid medium obtained by this process.

Abstract: Emulsion polymerisation of unsaturated monomers for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions is carried out with a radical initiator in presence of a bridged bis-(2-hydroxybenzylidene-amino) metal complex which is more soluble in acid, basic and/or neutral water than in styrene. A radical-initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation process for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions, in which ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) is/are dispersed in an aqueous medium and polymerised with the aid of a radical initiator in presence of a metal-organic compound. This metal compound has a structural feature of formula (I): M = a metal ion; Independent claims are included for: (a) aqueous polymer dispersions obtained by this process and containing metal-organic compound(s) (I); and (b) metal-organic compounds with the structural feature (I).
