Abstract: Diazotisation of aromatic amines (I) in the solid state with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) comprises reacting (I) with NO2, in a gaseous or liquid state, in the presence of an inert diluent. Also claimed are methods of producing azo dyes by: (i) treating (I) with gaseous or liquid NO2 in the presence of a solid coupling component and an inert diluent; or (ii) reacting (I) with gaseous or liquid NO2 in the presence of an inert diluent and then reacting with a coupling component in a solid or liquid state, or in solution.
