Abstract: Liquid crystal compounds of the general formula I and II, Z -(X -R -Y-M)m I Z -(X -R -Y-M)n II in which the variables have the following meanings: Z = the radical of an m-hydric alcohol, an m-basic acid or of certain trivalent triazine derivatives; Z = the n-valent radical of a mono- or polynuclear aromatic compound; X = a chemical bond or -CO-; X = -O-, -S-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -SO2-, -SO2-O-, -O-SO2-O-, -NR -, -CO-NR -, -NR -O-, or -CO-N1-, where R = H or C1-C8-alkyl; m, n = 3 to 6; R = C2-C20 bridge having 2 to 12 bridge members which can be interrupted by -O-, -S- or -NR -, these hetero units in each case being separated by at least two C atoms; Y = a chemical bond, -O-, -S-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -NR -, -CO-NR - or -NR -CO; M = mesogenic group. These compounds are suitable for the production of optical and electro-optical recording media and display elements.
