    SOLUTION: A phosphonium salt of formula (R is a 5-40C hydrocarbon group; R' is a 1-4C alkyl or a 6-10C aryl; and X is an anion) is purified by a process containing the steps of (a) passing a solution of the crude phosphonium salt through a bed of a cation exchange resin having a salt form, (b) washing the cation exchange resin with at least one polar protonic or aprotic solvent and/or at least one nonpolar solvent and (c) eluting the phosphonium salt from the cation exchange resin with an electrolyte solution optionally combined with a polar aprotic solvent.
