Abstract: Production of hydrogen cyanide and water comprises contacting gaseous formamide with a catalyst at 350-800 deg C in a flow-type reactor with electric resistance heating. An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising either: (a) a flow reactor containing one or more catalyst-coated heating elements that can be heated by means of a voltage source; or (b) one or more flow tubes that can be heated by means of a voltage source and contain a bed of catalyst.
